Do I need school experience?

While having school experience would be helpful, this is not a prerequisite for applying. We want to encourage a variety of teachers into the profession and recognise that not all potential teachers have had school-based experience. We recognise that new graduates and career changers have a wealth of other experience and knowledge that can be drawn upon in teaching. We therefore look for the potential to train to teach, for example, having excellent communication skills, being a team worker, responding to feedback and being proactive.

Which age ranges does our primary courses cover?

5-11 years.  This does mean that you will be able to apply for positions in a Reception class.

What are the entry requirements?

GCSE grade 4/C or above in English, mathematics and science or an equivalent qualification.

An honours degree, ideally 2:2 or above.

All offers made will be subject to a full DBS check and Fitness for Work assessment.

What qualification will I gain?

You will gain recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – this is the qualification required to teach in England.

If you opt to complete the academic course with our external provider, you will also gain a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE).

Can I do the course part-time?

Unfortunately our programme is not offered as a part-time option.

What is the course structure?

The course begins in September and runs for one academic year until the following July.

You will complete two placements during the year totalling at least 120 days (placement A takes place September-February, placement B takes place February – March).

You will train four days per week in two of our partner schools during these two placements.

You will receive centre-based training every Thursday during your training year.

Four Intensive Training and Practice (ITAP) weeks are spread out throughout the year, allowing you to focus on some key, granular aspects of teaching.

How much does it cost and how will I finance my training?

This is a non-salaried route.

The cost of the training is £10,050 including the PGCE.

You will normally be able to apply to student finance for a loan to cover these fees. You may also be eligible for an additional loan to support your living expenses.

Anything else I need to know?

Trainees must be prepared to travel to attend their placement schools. Where we can we will take location of home address into account when assigning placements. We aim to ensure commutes are no more than 45 minutes maximum.

How do I apply?

All applications are done through the DfE’s ‘Apply‘ website.  Go back to our home page and ‘Click here’ to start your journey!
